View Full Version : This new street tire class....

It sounds like this Street Tire Pax class will likely exist this year.

Some questions:

What would be the correct class letters? Do we stick with just adding a "T" on the end (AST, FSPT, EPT, BMT, etc) or do we all use ST or T or....?

If we jump cars with different PAX's during the year, will we be able to add our points together between different cars for the championship?

The class is gonna be huge. Who's planning on running it?

>It sounds like this Street Tire Pax class will likely exist this year.

We should know that in about 8 hours.

>What would be the correct class letters? Do we stick with just adding a "T" on the end (AST, FSPT, EPT, BMT, etc)

That's what we did last time. I found that making the class letters upper case and the "t" lower case made the concept a little clearer. That's the way I printed them in the results: CSt (pronounced "Charley-stock, tire) or BSPt (pronounced "Baker-street-prepared, tire).

>or do we all use ST or T or....?

NO! The scorers are going to need all the help they can get. Also, your competitors need to know what your car is so they can protest you if you try to run it at the wrong PAX. Just like any other class, be sure that your entry form and your car display the same class designation.

>If we jump cars with different PAX's during the year, will we be able to add our points together between different cars for the championship?

Sure, if all the cars are run in Street Tire class. The proposed Street Tire class is all one class. It would be treated for trophies for the event, and for year-end points, as all one class. Otherwise, there is no point in having it.

>The class is gonna be huge.

You bet. Whether this is good or bad depends on your point-of-view. I expect most people's point-of-view would be different at different times.

>Who's planning on running it?

Provided of course there is such a thing... Check back tonight.

Assuming we end up with the new Street Tire class, I'd concur that simply adding a "T" to the regular class letters would be the simplest means of identification. That also ties in well with our timing & scoring software, which designates PAX classes with a single character.

I am confused.

Having not participated in any events for 2 and half years I guess I need to understand what exactly the street tire class means.

I remember running in GST as a class. I would trophy based on where I placed in the class. I was never sure exactly what the PAX times were for other than to show you were you would be all vehicles being equal.

Now, it looks like there will be one street tire class. The way I think I understand it is that your place in this new class will be based on your PAX time rather than your actual so the PAX really means something again.

I would just like some clarification as to how competing in this new class will be different than from previous years.

Thanks!

Where will you stock Miata folks with street tires be running this year? CS or PAXed street tire? Personally, I dislike PAX 'cuz it isn't the equalizer it claims to be, but will probably run where most of the stock 1800cc Miatas run. Or are you planning to go to R rubber?

Take note: You can still opt to run your Street Tired Miata in CS along withe the R rubber guys. It isn't mandatory that you enter Street Tire combined. My observations of our typical events at Midway suggest that you are not giving much up. The slow, tight nature of those courses are a great equalizer. I have paxed near the top on Street tires there, so it can be done. Depends on who shows up with what too, but you getthe idea. Have fun!

I'm with Dave on this. I personally don't like the PAX either.

If you are running Falkens and are a better driver you more then
likely will win your class even if other people run race tires.

If you look at the MOWOG 7 from last year. Two of the top 3
cars with doors had street tires. I feel like I am alone on this
but Falkens are basically race rubber. The rules don't say it, but
from my expereince it seems that way. Having run Kuhmo V700's,
Yoko somethings, Toyo RA-1's and Falken's I feel I have some
idea of what I am talking about. (damn I need to try some hoosiers)

I would guess the difference between Falkens and Kuhmo's is about the
same as the gap between Kuhmo's and Hoosier's. I would also guess that
Falkens are almost equal to Toyo RA-1's and Yoko something or others.

So don't be a sally and run in PAX, Run in the class SCCA created for
your car and enjoy the fun.

Coming soon to an event near you (http://www.metricchemical.com/motorsport.html)

I was just surprised we were including SP & P in this, that's all.

I'll probably be running CS on R compounds. I'd run street tire if there wasn't anyone else in CS, but that's unlikely.

I just want to run where the competition is. I'm going to have R-compounds, but I can go either way. We've got some darn fast ES miata drivers in MAC that I'd like to be competing against along with the CS crowd. Where are they planning on running?

Chuck? Adam? Josh? Ina?

What say ye?

Dave Keillor

Okay, I'll take the plunge and say that Ina and I will run CS. Given my dislike of PAX and given that I'll suck with or without R rubber in any class, it's the honorable thing to do. Now if I would lose about 6 inches in height and 75 pounds in weight so I'd fit better in the Miata I might be able to do better. At least I'm not usually DFL in my class and my wife enjoys beating me.

Note to Chris B. (Miata 37) and the Mosleys. The old yeller Rabbit is going ITB road racing this year instead of autocrossing. Bruce (my son) has at least one sponsor and will probably race it in the 12 Hours at Nelson Ledges amongst others. I guess old Rabbits never die -- they just keep on racin'.

Dave

That is great! I still have a soft spot for that little thing. I wish him good luck and
I hope to see you at some events this year.

In response to Steve's post;

>I would guess the difference between Falkens and Kuhmo's is about the

FYI for anyone who cares. The Hoosier is faster on concrete than the Kumho V700 and the Kumho is faster on asphalt, even more so when temps are cooler. Kumho rules on asphalt. This was established in testing on a 99 Miata 10AE (a reliable source). If you run strictly on asphalt, go Kumho. The new tires may be a different story.

Harry,

Thanks for the info. Any chance of your brother being around for an event this year?
I need some big time help learning how to drive a mid engine car.

I know he is still an instructor with Evolution. I don't know if he will make it here this year. He will be as close as Peru and Oscoda for the Tours/Pros. I keep trying to get him back here for an event and co-drive w/ him. He's still co-driving the CSP Spyder.

Harry,

Tell him we need him to come back. If we ever have Evolution back here
I would be more likely to do it again if he was teaching. He was fun to learn
from and that is what this is all about.

I'm going to run CS, but am tempted by the street tire class with its PAX index and surely enormous class size. Nothing beats having lots of competition.

Adam Ansorge

I got the Koni shocks, the big front bar, the trailer hitch, the lightening equipment, and the extra set of rims and tires, now I just gotta put it all on the car. . .
When is it gonna warm up?

First event of the season in one month down in Iowa. . . who's going?

I'm planning on going down, but I'll probably be running GS or street tire in the neon. The weathers just a little too iffy this year for me to put insurance on the miata in march.

I'll be there with the MINI

Hey Chris, lets run the MINI and the Neon in the same class --- did you ever get any better tyres?

I will be looking to trade rides with someone so I can get twice the runs in --- any one out there want to drive "cute", what'cha got to trade a drive in???

I only drove the cute car on a wet asphalt autocross course, so I don't know what it is like when it has grip.

It's only OK on sweepers, but the thing is amazing through the slalom cones.:D
