View Full Version : Lightly modified 88 M5 ?

So i've got a BMW E28 M5 (1988). As far as i know, if this were a factory original it would be F stock. However, few 16 year old cars are factory original.

For instance, my particular example has
- non factory catalyst (not a performance cat, just one that you can get for less than $1300)
- lightened flywheel (ok, a legit performance modification)
- stronger crank hub (reliability mod, not aware of any performance impact)
- performance chip

Also, the drivers door interior skin is removed because iw as doing some wiring/lubrication work to the drivers door. This doesn't count as a gutted interior, right? :)

So given the modifications to the car, what class would it run in ? I'm a total novice so this is purely an academic question, as my classification will probably have little to do with my results :) I didn't see any explicit mention of replacing the crank hub with one made out of less compliant metal, nor did i see a mention of changing out your cat for a different cat (as opposed to cat removal)

Thanks,
Matt

Technically, I think STX or Street Prepared.

As a novice, you might just want to run SI (special interest).

How many miles on the car? How long have you owned it?

I've got an E28 M5 too. About 150K and am the 2nd owner (got it at around 120K miles about 6 years ago.)

i'll have to read up on SI, STX, and SP. This seems lousy :)

113k miles, i've owned it for 4 years, and i bought it with 98k miles on it. I've had the crank hub fail twice, so i started doing all maintenance myself and put on the Fahey bulletproof hub. I'm the 3rd or 4th owner of this one, i think.

Are you on the mye28.org boards ?

Specifically excluded from STX: BMW M5 (all)

Looks like ESP, via the catch-all rule for sedans over 3 liters.

You'd be in E Street Prepared. The flywheel & chip put you there (neither are legal for Stock classes). Note: I'm making an assumption that we will let you by with the missing door trim.

You can also run in MAC's indexed Street Tire class. Your car would be classed as an ESP car, and your time would be calculated using factors meant to equalize differences between different types of cars. This is a large class, with a wide variety of cars participating.

As a Novice, you may want to run in SI. This class is open to all cars, on a head-to-head basis. SI is specifically designed for Novices, as you can only win it once, at which point you move into a regular class.

Thanks!
