Hey everyone,

Sorry to post this if there's a section to look this up somewhere.

I've only autocrossed a couple times and my brother-in-law wants to give it a shot. He has a 1997 SVT Cobra, 4.6L with forced induction. He says he went somewhere to try to classify it and he seems to think he's too modified. This can't be true can it? He should be able to fit in somewhere, right?

Thanks for your help.

Adam

I'm certainly not an authority on this, so I could very well be wrong, but I think you would probably be okay in A modified (I believe the forced induction would put you there or in prepared). Outside of the street and stock classes, the rules get pretty complicated. Steve should be able to answer your question for sure.

Thanks for your input.
I know he'll be excited to hear the news!

Adam,

Exactly what modifications have been done to the car?

Unless he's gutted the interior or done something funky with the suspension pickup points, he can run the car in Street Modified 2 (SM2). This is shaping up to be a fun class for MAC this year, with a wide variety of cars competing.

I don't think he has, but I'll double check.
Thanks for the quick answer!

If the car was full-modified, the mod class for it would be E Modified. This is for cars that have at least the original floor pan and frame for the length of the passenger compartment. At least 2 litre engine size (2800cc if superchargd), no upper limit on displacement, no limit on origin of engine, minimum weight of 1500 pounds. Or at least that's the way I remember it.

Prepared won't work for a supercharged car, as I recall.

Does anyone know of a place where I could see the mod and prepared rules online, or would I just need to buy a book?

I'm not aware of an online version. If you're in either of those classes, I'd recommend buying a book/CD, as the rules are pretty arcane & complicated.

p.s. We'll have a few books for sale at the Timing trailer at Valleyfair this weekend. The price is $20.

Here's the latest info on his car....
"SM2 looked the closest to me, but I thought I was over on the displacement for a forced induction car.

I have made no changes to the interior other than to allow for a 5-point roll bar to be installed. I moved the battery to the trunk but I have an exterior shut off installed as required by NHRA.

In sum, I have put Eibach lowering springs in the car, and the supercharger (Vortech S-trim with aftercooler). The roll bar and 5 point harness shouldn’t be an issue as they are recommended safety gear by SCCA."

Still look like SM2?

SM2 allows for up to 5.0 litres of forced induction pushrod power, min wt of 2100lbs, or 4.0 litres of OHC forced induction. You said its a 4.6. Is it pushrod or over head cam? There is a SM2 grouping for "over displacement" cars, with a 2500# wt minimum. Maybe steve or lee could clairify if this would be the spot for you.

Thanks Dave, I'm checking on that now.

Adam,

The car is legal for SM2, as an "over displacement" SM car. The minimum weights aren't going to be an issue, as I'm guessing his car is several hundred lbs over the minumum.

-Steve

p.s. The 4.6 is an OHC engine.

In case it is not clear, the CD comes tucked in the book. The search function in your PDF viewer makes this a pretty valuable deal. SCCA rules are long and not-terribly-well-organized, so searching on a key word can help insure that you don't miss that "clarification" that is on the other side of the book from where it belongs.
