View Full Version : Class for a modded 1974 BMW 2002? Am I gonna get smoked?
Where is this page people are looking at that lists cars & classes? I'm wondering where my '74 2002 would fall...
It has been lowered, stiffer springs/shocks, front & rear sway bars, performance headers, exhaust, dual sidedraght 40MM carbs...around 150HP in a 2K LB car, am I gonna be smoked in whatever class I end up in (not that it matters to me, the car is a blast to drive)

Definitely a Street Prepared car. The 2002 ti and tii are classified in D Street Prepared and all other 2002s are in F Street Prepared.
Have any pictures of that 2002? It looks gorgeous from what I can see!

Sure do, check out this link: http://www.northstarbmw.org/mkp.aspx
Hey, we're missing some cars in the 'prepared' classes this year.
I'm not sure which class, but probably C or B prepared.
Come join us.:dancin:

If those carburators aren't stock or not offered as an option that year, then you're looking at one of the Street Prepared classes. If they are stock (or you put the stock ones back on) then you could go STS, which is a pretty big class. Either way, 150hp/2000lb BMW should be a potent autoxer.
They are not stock carbs, and not offered as an option...from all the replies it is sounding like Street Prepared is going to be the class. What is the A,B,C thing about?
When i took my 325i, I was assigned "GSX" if I remember correctly, what does that mean, and how does it fit in in the scheme of things?
In any case, can't wait to get out there and have some fun, thanks for helping me understadn how it works,

SP (street prepared) is a category of class, sorta like Stock or Modified or Prepared. In general, SP slots in between Stock and Prepared in order of speed (modified is fastest, stock is slowest). Don't think that SP is slow, though, because it's fast.
Anyhow, A, B, C etc SP are different levels of SP based on the car.
The last time you autocrossed was a while ago? The 325 used to be in G-Stock (GS) and X is usually used to indicate novice or street tire, depending on the autocross club. The 325 is now in D-Stock, with many of the same cars that used to be in G-Stock.
Your '02 is awesome.
Here's a couple of good websites for info

Nice 02, it's nice to see another vintage car in the mix

Again, thanks for all the great info guys. What the typical car makes/models that I'd be running with in my class?
Pardon my ignorance, but what excatly is a 73GT?
73 Opel GT
Check our past event results to see what local cars your up against.
You'd most likely be running with all the SP cars due to bumping to get a complete class.
Complete class = 3 competitors in class.

You never indicated whether your car was a ti/tii or a "regular" 2002, but for MAC events it likely won't matter. We don't get many FSP cars, so that class is invariably bumped to DSP for events. I believe we've had enough cars for a class in DSP at every event this year. Note: STX has also been bumped to DSP at several events this year.
You should do fine in DSP. We have a number of regulars, but there are no highly-prepped cars or untouchable competitors in the class, at present. Come out & join us!

Ok, I'll check out those lists.
Standard 2002, the 'ti' was not sold in the US (it was a higher performance carburated car), the 'tii' is fuel injected and the highest performance model (besides the turbo). Mine is neither, but has been upgraded in some areas.

Could be almost anything, but in this case it is Lee's 1973 Opel GT. At Afton Alps, it's also known as King of the Hill.
