Nifty.
You could go out to Office Max or some such place and buy a box of Avery label sheets. The uncut 8.5 x 11 sheets cost about 25 cents each. These would stick directly on your car, even if it was made of plastic. Most expensive scenario is a class with three letters and you own a three-digit number. This would require you to have 8 sheets, so your cost would be about 2 bucks plus toner.
You might want to do the old autocrosser's trick of passing the sticker over your jeans to reduce the grip before putting the sticker on. A good coat of wax on the car couldn't hurt.
Downside is that these pre-made class placards are Solo2 standard, so no "SI" or complete Street Tire like "CSt".
These pre-made signs print out at legal sizes. The numbers are 8.8 inches high. If you don't need paper or labels to put on your car (since your car is made of steel), these are good guides for cutting out black ControlTac vinyl to put on white magnetic. Just punch holes in the paper letter and use Scotch tape to hold the paper number to the black vinyl while you cut through both layers with a pair of scissors.
For my numbers I simply purchased a roll of colored magnetic sheet, grabbed a big scissors and removed everything that wasn't my numbers.
Whalla! Big, highly visible numbers and class designations for about $10, with enough material left over to provide backing for some stickers I had laying around.
The material is sold in art supply stores by the foot.
The PDF described above would make a perfect template for this kind of material.
