The Sports Car Club of Siouxland is finally holding an event in Sioux Falls. This is a two day autocross at the Sioux Empire Fairgrounds in Sioux Falls. August 28th and 29th. The site is large. Not as large as Valleyfair but... The fees are, get this, $20 for one day or $30 for both. Membership is not required. register at http://www.bmwia.org/sccs (this link) We are limiting the event to 120 drivers which is about 3 times more than we have ever had. Saturday will involve some autocross instruction for newbies by National and Divisional Champions. We believe that we will have six runs a day but then, we don't guarantee anything. Cheers Russ

WOW! This sounds awesome.

Why is the BMW club of Iowa holding the pre-reg, though, if this event is in South Dakota?

MattD

Edit: Add the cost of a hotel, and it is comparable in price to a COM Superweekend! Sweetness.

Sounds good (and cheap too). I'd go if I weren't planning on watching Ojibwe Forests that weekend.

"Why is the pre-reg done on the BMW site?"
Good Question.
Because I'm the webmaster of that site and the SCCS doesn't have a formal website. Also, you should have a number of Iowa Chapter BMWs in attendance to pick on.

Ah, yes. I will pick on those suckas with my Civic. :P ...as long as they are E30s or older. ;)

Yeah right.

Stephen will show them how to drive a BMW tho. :D

Ojibwe Forests or SCCS...watching or driving...ugh. :oneeye:

MattD

...is Rhys Millen still running in Pro Rally? I saw him in PA in 2002, but haven't really followed the series too much. He is an awfully good driver tho...

Come on, bring the Honda down. We are expecting many of our younger local import crowd to attend. Oh and Mr. Jones, yeah I counting on his presence. :) Growing tired of beating the corvettes alone. The more the merrier.

Randy,

I was also going to mention that something but it is to little to late. Dave Morton sold his super clean black 90 Vette w/ Z51 suspesion and 18xhuge wheels that hold 335/35R18's nicely. I could have seen you doing some serious damage in SP with that ride. It was a great buy for the sum he sold it for.

Russ,

Do you have a street tire index class or SCCA classes only.

We don't have Street tire classes. We has ST classes or whatever but no street tire or index classes. We don't have PAX classing either.
However, we do have many runs. We are a small group that doesn't like small courses. It is normally fun down here. May be a little warm. Mr. Jones and Mr. Aro have always had fun down here.

Just some notes on the Sioux Falls site. I ran in an event put on there last summer by the Sioux Falls Corvette Club. I stayed with the in-laws in Webster, SD, and introduced my brother-in-law to his first autocross. At the event, they used a large, nearly new asphalt parking lot. (Appeared to be on the land where the oval track once was, as there was a grandstand on one side that is apparently used for stage shows now.) The lot was actually divided into two sections by a concrete walkway, with a driveway between them.

I don’t recall how many entries there were; but I think it was about 50. Everyone paddocked on a road running along side the lot. Plenty of space for 50. Not sure about the plans for 120 entries. At the Corvette event, the first half of the course was one of the tightest and slowest I’ve ever experienced; while the second half was one of the fastest. The first half was basically a compressed sine-wave, and I had to try to get the car back into first gear at at least three points. The second half was much faster, including slightly curving third gear run along nearly the entire length of the lot at one end, with a number of other challenging turns.

Mr. Maddy Daddy was there also, and I think he basically smoked most of the Vettes with his BMW. He’s more familiar with the site and events there, and may have some more enlightening thoughts on the topic. My description is only of the Corvette event.

Sioux Falls is a bit of a ride; but it’s pretty modern city and could make for a fun weekend.

Good description of the site. Yes the Corvette club event was very tight on one end. This one will not except at the transition from one lot to the other. Plenty of room for more cars because the access road surrounds the lot.

Russ,

If you are the same Russ that drives an ///M3 LTW and gets mentioned nearly every month in Roundel, it would be worth the trip just to watch you drive. It would also be very fun to see you up against some the MAC hot shoes.

Guilty.
Bring the MAC guys down. It would be fun.

Who's designing the course? Can we expect a high quality pre-nationals thinker style course?

wiley
08-04-2004, 06:29 PM
The surface is different, Blacktop vs. aged and broken concrete. The lot has some limitations but I would expect that more people will use the first 3 gears. Also, the course will be longer than nationals. The course will not be narrow. You will get more runs than at Nationals and no one will bump your car out of its class if you are faster.;)

The course designers will be me, Mike Bartley and the Miller boys.

Man, makes me want to make the trip from Cheeseland! I'm doing a little AX school in LaCrosse though and can't make it. :(

I have run about 3-4 events at this site with the Sioux Falls Corvette Club, and it's large (almost as big as Valleyfair, last event 1:24 was FTD, Russ of course) and it's CHEAP!! If the course design will not be as tight as the corvette guys had it (like Russ is hinting at) then it should be TONS of fun!:burnout:

Russ,

There were a lot of guys that wanted to go, but with the concrete of Waterloo available two weeks before Nationals, we all headed down there. Don't give up on us for future events.

Russ was absolutely right!! Awesome weather, cheap fees, 1st & 2nd place awards in every class, fast couse, quick worker turn around, only 2 re-runs due to timing that I know of all weekend.......It was terrific! :burnout:

Russ,

Sounds like a good event - sorry we missed it. Like Adam said, don't give up on us. MAC had 9 drivers at the Waterloo event. If you can schedule events that don't conflict with Iowa Region, MAC or Milwaukee Region, we'll show up in numbers like that or greater.
