SCCA 2005 rules include Snell Foundation "K" helmets. I don't see any reason not to do this, since a K (for "kart") helmet is essentially an SA helmet without the fireproof requirement.
Should we add "K" to the Met Council rules?
Wish I'd thought about this before the rules meeting...

So then is there any difference between an M-2000 & a K-2000?

Actually, the K and SA standards were merged in the new SA/K 2005 standard, which we decided not to worry about for this year. The only difference I see is the fire-resistant lining requirements for SA. Prior to the new standard, the most current kart helmet standard was K-98. To answer Dennis' question, there is no K-2000 standard.
Personally, I don't think we need to worry about this until next year, as none of the Met Council clubs have asked about allowing karting helmets. Also, I'm not sure PCA and NCCC will follow the SCCA's lead in allowing older K helmets.

So....
Is my SA95 helmet still legal for met council events or do I need to go helmet shopping?
I believe it was our insurance provider that dictated what helmet ratings were required...

This will be the last year for the Snell 95's. As soon as the Snell 2005's come out the Snell 95's will be illegal but that won't happen till at least Oct 2005 when The Snell foundation will offically unveil it according to there website. So we are looking at the 2006 season as Snell 2000 being the oldest helmet allowed. Phil-- I hope Roger J. doesn't show up next year for one of our events. If he does I'll delegate 914 Dave to tell him;)

The M2000 standards require a wider field of view both horizontally and vertically than the K and SA helmets, while the K and SA standards mandate an additional test for impacts against roll bars.

No, not our insurance. Met Council likes to stay current with the requirements of the most stringent of our member clubs, and that is not LOL/SCCA. The Corvette clubs need to require NCCC standards and the Porsche club needs to require PCA standards to be in line with their insurance. These national clubs are more stringent than SCCA.
You will be OK for 2005, but may expect to need to upgrade for 2006. I didn't have any trouble getting rid of my helmet last time. I sold it on Ebay to an SCCA member in another part of the USA.
