Is anyone planning to trek down to Iowa this weekend for the DMVR Solo2 event at Saylorville? I thinking about doing a flying one-day down & back trip on Sunday.

Yea, I'm going. It's a beautiful place, decent-sized lot, sealed pavement for fun and I'll co-drive with you if Bienert takes that old slow steering Jetta again. Codriving helps make the drive worth it.

I might consider it since being south of the Cities I have a headstart, but I wonder if anyone knows when they want people to be there, should I assume 8:30 or so?

Adam, How far of a drive is it from Austin?

I just sent a message to the event managers, to confirm the schedule and that the event is still being held. I'll post the reply.

What is the cost of the event for non scca types, and has anyone been to the waterloo event site? Whats that one like?

I heard back from the EM for this event.
"The Event is Still On. Registration will start about 9:30 (Probably). Will depend on How Many Drivers sign up. If like last time (70) we will probably start Racing about 12:00"
Fees are $20 for non-members & $15 for members.
I'm planning to load up the WRX and hit the road about 6 AM from the NE suburbs. If anyone wants to ride along & co-drive the Rex, let me know. (no extra charge for the choppy ride down!);)

The Waterloo sight is my favorite in the area (at least MY area) It is concrete and plenty big. Plenty of room for fast flowing courses. The next event is May 25th and Chris Bienert and I are co-event masters. We'll make an awesome track!

I plan on going to the Waterloo event on May 25. Large Concrete site and Adam's flowing course design seems like a great combo!:p

The DMVR website lists this event as May 18. Has the date been changed?

Dave,
I had noted that event date in my calander as May 18, also. But now the website says May 25. I think a number of event dates on their website have been changed.

Yes,the May 18th event at Waterloo has been changed to May 25th and the Fairmont event at the end of July is cancelled due to repaving. The plus side, obviously, is a better surface at Fairmont for next year.

Hey Adam,
Thanks for the help and co-drive at the DMVR event yesterday! The CRX was a hoot to drive - quite a contrast going from the WRX to your light, tail-happy Honda!
I'll work on the wife for a hall pass, so I can drive down to your 5/25 event. The big concrete pad sounds like fun!

It was fun driving the WRX too. For those that don't know about Steve's car, its a beast. The car is prepared fairly close to the limit for STX rules minus tire width, exhaust, and possibly a few other minor mods. The power is very strong when on boost, and the chassis and suspension feel very stiff and precise. I was over a second quicker in this car than I was in my CRX and felt as though there was much more to extract out of this car. Two areas where the car could improve are grip and, if it were legal, a pop off valve. Currently the car is fitted with 215 width Bridgestone S-03's; a great tire, but the car would improve with the addition of 225 Azenis's. Better yet, the car would REALLY be a monster with some R-compounds, but this isn't legal in STX.
A pop off valve for the turbo would cure the other problem I had. Nailing the brakes after a long straight resulted in very little braking action for about a quarter of a second. While this doesn't sound like much, it felt like about 2 seconds and caused me to miss a couple of apex's. I believe the problem stems from the boast forcing the engine to work against the brakes for a split second. Does this sound plausible? Anyhow, it scared the begeebers out of me everytime it happened.
Lastly, turbo lag was quite pronounced, but could easily be dealt with with some creative foot work. Coming into most corners, I would left foot brake, nail the accelerator with my right foot well before the apex, and then release the brake once past the apex which turned this car into an ICBM on the staights. What fun! This took some concentration away from other areas though, so it doesn't make for the easiest car to drive well. This car takes work to make it go fast.

Adam,
Two upgrades are coming soon that should help improve the car:
1. Different brake pads!! Actually, I think the problems you were having with the brakes are primarily due to the fact that the brake system was seriously overboosted by Subaru. As a result, modulation is difficult, even with upgraded pads. I've been talking about this with some of the top WRX autocrossers, and there are some pad options that will significantly improve modulation.
2. Turbo-back exhaust! Nearly 20 additional HP, including a bit of additional low-end power. Plus, you'll actually be able to hear the engine with a helmet on! (I've found the quiet engine to be more of a problem than I thought it would be.)
Now I just need to wear out those S-03's, so I have an excuse to get some 225 Azenis!
And of course, I continue to work on the most important upgrade of all - the driver! (The next two weeks have been dedicated to training my left foot how to brake - annoying my passengers in the process...)

If you're in a WRX, you may have hit a bump while under that heavy braking, causing the ABS to take over and release momentarily. This has happened to alot of owners on the highway with bridge joints or potholes causing the ABS to release the brakes during an emergency braking situation.

Steve, above is a quote from sccaforums.com that probably explains what kept happening to me. They also said it could happen after a rise in the road: we had one of those on the straight where this kept happening.

Does anyone else notice that 'Anyone going to 4/13 DMVR autox in IA?' doesn't have a darn thing to do with this thread anymore?

Phil,
Yeah, 4/13 was kinda left behind quite a few replies ago! I just changed the thread to "DMVR Events". Speaking of which, it looks like I got a hall pass to attend the 5/25 event in Waterloo. I can't wait to try out Adam & Chris' course on that big lot!
