View Full Version : Important! MOWOG 2 at HTC Cancelled
Regretfully, I have to announce that MOWOG 2, scheduled for May 4 at Hennepin Technical College has to be cancelled.
The reason is that the Code Enforcement Department of the City of Brooklyn Park concluded that it could not approve permits for further autocrosses at that location. The city received a noise complaint from a nearby resident in connection with our activity during the MAC novice driving school last Sunday. We hoped this wouldn't happen; but the result was not wholly unexpected.
I can discuss this matter further at the MAC monthly meeting tonight at Parrish's Supper Club in St. Paul. For a more complete explanation and answers to questions, please try to come to the meeting tonight at 7:30. (There are a lot of other interesting items relating to sites and future events on the agenda also.)
MAC will attempt to reschedule MOWOG 2 for another site as soon as possible. We'll post information here and on the website as soon as we accomplish something.

It's unfortunate that one complaint can have such an effect on our sport.
All the more reason to come to tonight's meeting at Parrish's. Bring ideas for locations. If you know a contact person at the potential site, so much better!

It looks like we might have to have another Pro-Kart day.
This time John Boos can't beat everyone again. He will be
at Indy.

Well, that pretty much sucks. Can I say "sucks" on this board? Oh well. They couldn't just let us do our one event scheduled this year if we promised not to come back next year? Bummer.
Drew- Did you have a chance to check out the "Imation" building, by the west end of Lake Elmo, just east of 694 and hwy 5? I drove by on my way back to Rice Lake, and while they have several smaller lots facing hwy 5, there is an older, L-O-N-G lot in the back that was interesting... Also, have we ever talked to schools about using their lots? I realize this could be a ton of red tape, but what isn't these days. While I went to Stillwater at the old high school, in town, has anyone been by the newer, "university" of Stillwater H.S., kinda by where hwy 5 joins hwy 36? I've never been to those lots, but if the lots are 1/2 as big as the school....

Good idea, since my day will now be open..

I guess you can say cockpit now. Different server, I suppose. Oldtimers makes it hard to remember that we changed.
I'll be at the meeting tonight to discuss this site problem, even though I am really tired. If the old guy starts to snore, just give his chair a gentle tap.

Intersting you should bring those up. I ride rigth past them on the way to brothers in Stillwater. For soem stupid reason, I hadn't cruised around looking at them. I can next weekend if no one else has by then. Thanks for the great suggestions!

Does anyone go through Belle Plaine much? is anyone using the Excelsior-Henderson place for anything? I havn't checked out the lot real closely but I bet the city would love to make some money on that lemon.

I think Randy looked at it or worked there. It was not very promising, but if anyone is out that way take a look.
I saw the Lockheed Martin parking lots is in Eagan last week and they looked like a possiblity. If anyone wants to give them a look and let Chuck know what you think or if you can find a contact that would be great.
Let the site hunt continue....

The lockheed lot looks nice but I bet we would run into the same problem as HTC, there is alot of residential crap around.
We need a place in BFE, or an industrial park.

I agree, but if we could use it once or twice it might be better then nothing. We just don't want to spend to much time trying to get it.
Hopefully this All-Right Parking works out.

Jon,
Regarding the Excelsior-Henderson lots, I drove into the lots last fall, 1/3 the size of Midway. It was a surprise considering the size of the facility.

What's the scoop with Dakota County Technical College? It would seem to be an ideal venue. Does AARF already have it locked up for all the open dates?
Also, has anyone checked out other large tenants in the industrial parks along 13/169 in Shakopee? There are quite a few big facilities down there, including ADC, Toro, etc. I can look around a bit this weekend, as I drive right by on the way to the in-laws.

Steve,
Dakota County Technical College allows training sessions only. No timing and scoring, thats competition.
I'll do a quick tour along 169 on my way home.

One note on All Right, we cruised by there after the Novice class and took a look. This site *is* usable, but it will take a very crafty course, designed by a committee, to avoid too many danger spots. It would tend to get a little one dimensional if we used it a lot, but if we could do maybe two events a year there, it would be worth it. Something was to be brought up at the meeting by my understanding.

There was some talk a while ago about MOWOG 3 being cancelled as well. What's the status?
Darryl
05-01-2003, 03:44 PM
MOWOG 3's location is uncertain at this time but has not been cancelled. Midway had to cancel in favor of a more lucrative event. When Midway submitted a open date schedule to Drew they did indicate that date was subject to cancellation.
The site search goes on.

I wish Ford did have some big lots in St Paul. Then they would not have kicked us out of Canterbury Park.
I ran an autocross for the Minnesota Mustangers at the Ford Plant when Tipi was a pup. There was a Ford motorsports club in those days, and the Minnesota Mustangers had a charter for it. The lot was almost unusable, and I think it is probably gone now, replaced by the Paint Building.

I believe MOWOG III coincides with the June Bug SCCA Rallycross in Corcoran, MN. On a different date, that might be a good option.
Does anyone here have friends in United Properties? The old Cray/SGI/Wamnet campus at 655 Lone Oak Drive in Eagan is now pretty much a ghost town owned by United Properties and has some pretty huge lots. If someone can figure out who to get permission from, that might be a sweet location. There are no neighbors to complain, since Seymour Cray had the surrounding area made into nature preserve and walking trails. It also has the coolest buildings I've worked in.

My wife used to work for United Properties, I wonder if she would know who to talk to.

I believe WAMnet rents the B building with the small lot. The big lots are vacant ever since Cray, SGI, and Honeywell left. I'm not sure how appropriate the site is, since there are quite a few islands. Someone might want to go scope it out. Actually, I hear WAMnet's doing well. I never thought it'd happen either.
Reason #2 that no one would hear us or care about the noise... It's in the MPLS airport flight path where everyone has ultra thick windows and is used to it.
Well, this is disappointing considering i just got the Miata back yesterday and it is ready to go now. Was looking forward to trying out all my new toys on sunday, next time i guess. There is this big lot off hwy 10 in Blaine i believe. Looked really nice, really big and new recently re-done. Not sure who owns it, have to check it out next time i'm up that way.

Not that I'm aware of. Did anyone even take a look at the parking lots and/or know the current status?
In looking at the aerial map for the largest lots, "huge" appears to be a bit of overstatement.
http://www.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=655+Lone+Oak+Drive,+Eagan,+MN&ie=UTF8&ll=44.8552,-93.124452&spn=0.003346,0.010729&t=h&om=1
The largest contiguous lot has an irregular shape, and some islands around the perimeter that limit usable space.

Pan up and to the right just a little. Another lots about the same size. Looks like maybe a little bigger than Midway. but two of them. What place is that??

This I think is the old Cray building. Two lots and something that looks like a track field or soccer field or hopefully another parking lot.
I do know a couple of soft heads that used to work there.

That's a Northwest Airlines facility. I think it may be staffed 7 x 24. It would be worth checking out some weekend to confirm.

Ecolab owns and occupies the building/campus at 655 Lone Oak in Eagan. They use it for research and development.

It's the NWA headquarters. Nice sized lot but terrible surface. I made an inquiry to the facilities director when I was at NWA a couple years ago, but they declined due to limited employee weekend traffic. You can try again but wouldn't put much effort into it.
