If we start it a couple weeks later, would you be interested?

You can wear whatever you want. No matter how cold it is, you will work up a sweat, so short sleeves work best. Glove are also nice. Anything that will reduce the effort it takes to hold onto the steering wheel will amke a big difference towards the end of a race, especially early in the season when you're not used to it.

i'd recommend some decently narrow shoes if you have big feet and are tall. I usually wear adidas adi speeds or some kind of race oriented shoe. just not skate shoes (tried it a bunch of times, too big in my size 12, the bottoms almost didn't it into the stirrups type pedals) or boots. most tennis shoes would probably be ok. I usually wear a light zip up sweater that breathes well as it starts out chlly and gets warmer as you go.

I'd suggest something with a shoulder pad. If you plan on using a grappling hook, I'd recommend gloves.

I'm thinking of getting to Prokarts this Thursday evening for some practise. They're booked from 6-9pm, but as of today, they still plan to have arrive-and-drive karting from 9-11pm. (It pays to check again before you head down. Sometimes they book special events at the last minute.)

So are these points just for last night or is it for both weeks combined. Also how are the points awarded?
magicsammy
11-10-2006, 01:18 PM
these are combined totals for the first two weeks
If I understand this correctly, you get points (10-1) for your finish in the first heat, so finish #1 = 10 pts, #2 = 9 pts , etc.
then you are awarded points for (20-1) on your overall finish.
So for the first race, I finished fifth so I got 4 points
then in the DLQ, I finished 3rd = 7 pts
4+7 = 11 pts for the week

Well, maybe for SOME people...hopefully not ALL of us. :D
But seriously, I do want to mention that a number of us who have done this for a while (including Tim) were talking last night about how well the "newbies" have been doing with regard to driving smart and paying attention to what's going on around them this year.
A little bit of the chrome horn is normal/expected, and having a 6-kart pile-up is simply going to happen now and then no matter who is driving. But as far as I could tell, everyone was really doing a good job of trying to pass fairly and cleanly. I think I only saw one black flag so far, but I think it was maybe just a matter of learning the ropes, because after the one penalty stop it was a non-issue.
And people were really paying attention to the blue flag...sometimes letting leaders pass before a blue flag was even waived because they were aware of what was going on around them. I know when I was being hounded by Ed in the last few laps of the main, we were able to get through and keep racing without any problem.
I'm sure the new track layout has made it easier to race clean, but it still takes a cool head and a sharp eye to drive well. So big thanks to everyone. It's been a blast so far!
And if anyone is worried about being able to turn top lap times, just keep at it. If there is one thing I've learned in the past three years of running ProKart, it is that nearly everyone catches on after a few races. Especially after they start shuffling the starting order for the heats the points battles will be close. Why do you think Katie and I are trying to get as many points as we can right away?

And if anyone is worried about being able to turn top lap times, just keep at it.
Heh, during the LCQ this week I took fastest lap! Now, that didn't allow me to pass Steve M., but wow, at least I had one good lap! =]
I feel like I've gone from "let them pass you without becoming a barrier" to "if they screw up bad you can pass, try to hold from there". I feel like that's pretty good progress for one week. Also I feel like I notice/understand the difference between how the karts run now, and how that changes the braking points. (and to lesser extent, the line) Maybe it was just the shoes, man that made a difference.
esper

I'm still hoping people catch on slow so i can stay in the top ten. I think that a lot of people are going to get a lot faster than they might think by the end of the year. driving in traffic is pretty new to some people, but once you get used to it and learn a few of the corners people will start getting much more competitive.

Going off of what neal said....
The thing that bothers me...is that I tend to treat karting like it is real road racing....where it cost $ and time if you crash...that and other drivers get ****ed at you if you are bending fenders on thier car. Now a lot of the people I kart with seem to have the bumper car/demolition derby mindset.
I am no expert but it seems to me that it is more adventagious to hold back and wait for the crowd to thin out, someone spin out, or someone to screw up than it is to play bumper cars. It is usually more advantagious to lift or brake than to run into someone...even though you will have to lift quite a bit to avoid that one accident that will knock you down 5 places.

So week 3 is in the books. The heat races were run inverted (i.e. fast guys in the back). Heat 1 was 1st through 9th, heat 2 was "The rest of us". I'll let everyone tell thier own stories, but there was a lot of "action". This gave the points standing a bit of a shake-up, not huge changes in positions, but the points standings are a lot closer now:
1. Barry 70 (-0)
2. Ed 69 (-1)
3. Darrel 68 (-2)
4. Neal 67 (-3)
5. Izaak 65 (-5)
6. D V 64 (-6)

Going off of what neal said....
Yeah, well...after tonite, I might have to revise that post!
Seemed like everyone was getting out their aggressions left over from being stuck with their in-laws all last weekend or something. I haven't seen that much bumping, crashing, spinning, and so forth for a long time. I was not exactly a model citizen myself, either. Katie and I were bashing it out pretty good at the back of the pack in the 1st heat. There were tons of incidents during pretty much every race...especially the main.
Let's hit the reset button on that one... 8)

I didn't mind the reversed heat so much =]
I just wanted to stay out of trouble as much as possible and that strategy worked out for me ok.
the leaderboard is significantly more scrunched up now thoiugh which should make for an interesting rest of the season. Every place really counts now.
Well we'll see if the Sunday League
can stay clean after all this time off

LOL, I was having fun. If you were bumping it's because I was slow, and I seem to recall repaying the favor. =] The pass you made the second time around was good, just wish it hadn't cost me two spots. =]
The rough and tumble meant I was passed and then re-took several people several times, it was fun. I enjoyed getting to start up next to the pole, and I was proud that I could manage to only lose one position in that race. I feel like I'm getting the hang of it, even if I still don't "get" the fist turn or the far U-turn.
Zak, I really liked our little battle, managing to keep you behind me for a while, despite your weight bumping advantage, and then keeping right on you for a while even after you passed, that felt pretty good.

Fun racin', but definitely more chrome horn than the Sunday group (so far...)
Starting from the back of the pack as a sub I wasn't able to make my way far enough to the front to avoid the LCQ.
In the LCQ I started mid-pack and after I passed I think one person, I got some of the aforementioned chrome horn (ok, chrome fender) going into the esses. Instead of settling down & concentrating on just passing, I succumbed to the red mist :x & proceeded to spin the horn-giver in the next corner.
DUMB. That had us both stationary for long enough that getting to the front was at best a distant possibility. I finished 4th or 5th, so alas I didn't make it to the show. :( Sorry Zak
Actually, I think if I had to run another 35 (!) laps right after the back-to-back 25 lappers (heat B + LCQ) I would have been one sore dude today.
So 50 fun laps, and a good lesson in being clear-headed.
Actually, Zak & I had it all planned-out that I would finish there so he will be ideally positioned to start from the front in the "front-half" heat next time ;)

When you are in the group of final race spectators like I was last night you get a different perspective… You were driving well Steve, but… You had 4 karts behind you that were much faster… Yes they did hit you from behind, and from the side… But when they got beside you, you would turn in and pin them against the wall… They tried passing you on the outside, you would run them in the wall… When they got past you, you chose to use them as a break and pound them out of the way and re-pass them… It wasn’t a “thug thing” you were being black flagged for blocking… Tim, the dude running the show, said what the heck is he doing / thinking…

"agressive passing" due to "aggressive blocking" managed to cost me 2nd place in the first round, I should have done like Ivan did (when he passed me) and just waited for my opportunity. But, after three laps or so, I was a little tired of waiting.
I'd like to thank my next-to-pole position, and my winter ski jacket and gloves for the win. Instead of being a near-cripple with muscle soreness and frozen hands by the end of the night, I was sweaty and still goin!

That is **** poor way to pass
That trick kept me out of the final last Sunday. I never give up the inside when people are behind me because I seem to always get spun and it usually costs me about a .5 to 1 seconds a lap to run that line, but it keeps me from getting throttled into the wall and gives the faster kart the opportunity to pass on the outside if they don't start running the same line as me.

The problem with that is that if your running the fast line, you enter the corner faster than the guy who is hugging the inside, and end up tapping them. Going wide gives up too much throttle time.
I sat at the back of the finals because there wasn't any room to pass people, and I would be coming in fast and they would be fighting it out mid-corner going slower than I was. I bounced off John more than once.
Sometimes people need to just give up the spot for the sake of fun. It stinks sitting behind people for 20 laps unable to run a good time.

Hmmm...you don't suppose those two statements might be a bit of a "chicken and egg" scenario, do you?
If somone is clearly faster than you, and you just sit there and take the blocking line ALL THE TIME, LAP AFTER LAP you can expect them to get a little aggressive.
Even Tim agrees with that one. We were just talking about that sort of thing before our league last night, actually. The guy in front definitely has a liegitimate right to take a defensive line. And the guy behind needs to be patient and find a legitimate way to pass. But if someone is all over you like a cheap suit for ten laps straight, and all you do is slow everyone down, you're not only being un-sportsman-like...you're just asking for someone to put you into a wall.

No I don't.
I don't except them to get aggressive. I expect them to find the line to get by because it is there. Holding the inside and exiting on the inside is not the fast way around, but it protects you from getting spun out or put in the wall by some unsportsmanlike person that thinks that this is the way to pass. Sure you can't make your pass in the two easy places where you get on the inside and of the person and basically run them into the wall or force them to back off, but you have other areas to pass. If someone is driving a legitimate defense line yes it is going to be slower and it is going to make them look like they are all over you like a cheap suit and if the person behind them really is that much faster they should have figured it out in less then 10 laps how to pass or at least made attempts to get along side them. Now if the defensive line means cutting the other person off when they are on the side of them that is uncalled for and they should be black flagged, but the passer needs to make that move.

All I will say is that your FIRST attempt to pass someone should not be to push/slam them out ot the way - as you may find that person to be a lot less sporting about the situation after that.
Last year during a race, Neal came up behind me.
First lap, he gave me a couple taps
next lap, he gave me a couple bumps
next lap, he gave me a couple strong bumps
I got the message and moved over.
Speaking for myself, I do not always recognize who is behind me and often can't really tell how fast they are. But if someone gets the inside, I will give to them (except for last week - see previous post). But if you slam into me when I don't yield immediately because you are faster and "expect" me to roll over, get real.

I'm rolling over this year. The first two days I got spun around and winded up in last place. So now I'm just letting people by. I would rather just play the vulture and hope people get stuck in walls and black flagged and I can slowly sneak my way up half the pack.
StevenMosley
12-09-2006, 04:49 PM
In all honesty I am situational on this. If I'm running in the top 3 I'm not going to let off and pull over to let you pass, but if I'm in midpack or further backl and having fun trying to figure out the kart and doing some practicing on game day I will let people by to give myself space. (I really need to get there once when it is not league day)

I think this is the most sportsman-like way to go. Especially if it's not the last lap or something, all you're doing by continuing to block at this point is delaying the inevitable and ****ing someone off.

my personal opinion, if you;re so much faster than the person in front of you you should be able to pass them somewhere. If you cannot overcome clean blocking then you have an incomplete set of racing skills. In a road race if you are in a battle for a place and the car in front of you blocks legitimately for a few laps you're not just going to eventually just get frustrated enough to just put them into a wall and wreck their car just because you've decided you have had enough of sitting behind them. It means that you might be fast in the open field but there is room for improvement when it comes to making a pass. road racing (which karts are a mini-derivation of) is not the same as time trialing. Some time trialers might have blistering lap times when in the free and clear but can't handle driving in a crowd or passing effectively and those are all skills needed to be a well rounded road racer or kart driver. In any race series the more experienced and faster driers need to learn how to deal with sharing the track with the slower drivers, pro kart isn't any different. the slow guys are also going to need to know how to share the track with the fast guys but its a responsibility of both parties.
now if that person is blocking in such a way as to be unfair (such as putting the passer into the wall when they have made a legit move and have pulled alongside and will pass or assume the racing line before a turn) then the blocker is being a tool about it and also doing something that they would not normally do in a road race and would result in intentionally wrecking another's car. I don't think this is right either.
I don't see what the point in making too big a deal out of it is. Blockers need to block fairly and passers need to pass fairly.

No I don't.
My point is almost the same as before. If one person is running the inside line, and someone is tailing them, if they enter from wide on the fast line, they are bound to hit the guy going slow on the inside. If your hitting the apex, the other person will likely be there at the same time. And being that the karts don't have any real power, going out wide of the person won't give you enough to get past them. At best being beside them. I did this to Jon last week but had to back off going into the next turn.
There is a point to it when someone is blocking that you need to just get up along side of them and not give up position. And in that case, someone will likely be going into a wall. It's not fun, but neither is sitting behind people for 20 straight laps.
At some point, you have to give up being competitive for the sake of fun.
I'm hoping to not come up through the LCQ next week, and actually see what the competition is like, instead of being stuck fighting to pass the back cluster of karts.

Some of what might be happin is there are alot of good drivers seperated by only hundreds of a sec. With that in mind you are going to be in same spot at same time with someone at any givein point.I had a rough couple of laps (all my fault) eventully i had to let those guys pass or risk a flag.Dont get me wrong was great fun but i understood that i caught up to them passed them but they pasted me back and at that time i knew they were faster so why fight it.My inconsisent laps were not as fast as there slower more consistent ones. There is just not enough room on that track for clean raceing its gona get bumpy if u have people running nearly same lap times.Just my 2 cents.(feels like nascar out there and what fun hehe)

First off, I think that anyone who relies on the "if you're faster and you know how to drive, you should be able to pass them somewhere" either hasn't done much passing themselves, or else hasn't gotten stuck behind someone who knew how to block well.
But since neither of us have any road racing experience whatsoever, we can't directly refute this out of personal experience. But I invite you to watch each race of the SCCA Runoffs, and pay attention to the commentary. Each race is covered by either Dorsey Schroeder, one of the most famous names in American road racing, or another guy whose name I forget but also has a long history in the SCCA Club Racing ranks.
I've watched about 8 or so of the races now, and I've heard both commentators on numerous occasions say that they themselves would have gotten more aggressive when the person in front is substantially slower and blocking, or that they believed the person in back was behaving appropriately when they got past.
Looking for specific examples? Watch the T2 race where Will Turner (World Challenge and GrandAm fame) got stuck behind the 2nd place STI for lap after lap. The STI was obviously blocking in an unsportsman-like manner, but fortunately for him Will Turner is generally known for being "too nice" of a guy. Dorsey mentioned several times that he wouldn't have been.

In road racing typically you are allowed one move to block, you can't weave side to side. Passing in a road race is easier than passing in a go-kart. Why? because the track is wider and the performance differential between the cars is more than that of the prokarts. I can outbrake someone a lot easier in a car. Plus there is more room to set up on the outside of a corner. Of course no one is going to give up and wreck another wheel to wheel competitor, you could kill someone. What are the chances of someone being seriously hurt at prokarts by wrecking someone intentionally.

It's dependant on the situation for me. If you're driving near my pace and are only holding me up in a couple spots, I'm going to try to make as clean a pass as I can. If you're holding me up for most of the lap and driving a reasonable defensive line, I'll put pressure on you for a few laps before I move you out of my way, but I won't spin you or put you into a wall. If you block aggressively, I pass aggressively. If you swerve to keep me behind you or turn me into the wall when I'm beside you, I'm not going to risk letting that happen again, so you can expect me to put you into a position where you can't try that again. Lap traffic that won't move over for more than a lap gets the same treatment.
Feel free to do the same with me, but if you spin me or put me into a wall, do yourself a favor and make sure you're fast enough that I won't catch back up to you (a couple people made that mistake last year). ;)

When it comes to blocking a person on the inside, i will "shut the door" on them to keep them back there....if that person has thier front bumper even w/ my shoulders i will pull off line or lift to let them by, cuz if i don't someone is going to be in the wall, and they have then proven themselves to be faster. a few "hi, i am here, get out of my way" taps SHOULD be more than enough for the person in the lead to get out of the way. I will also not do that trick of letting the 1st kart do the braking....i will also not tap the rear corner of the car to send them into a spin, i will also not push the kart INTO the track out spot...all of which i consider dirty. There is nothing like a good "fight" out on the track, but nothing will **** people off like a dirty pass that puts someone in the wall.

He's someone I hadn't heard of before, but has won the Runoffs himself a couple times I guess. Sounds like a really nice guy and all, and clearly knows the SCCA, but he really sucks as a commentator. Hearing him try to describe the track layout in less than 30sec while using the video pen to point out passing zones is just PAINFUL. After about four races (all at the same track!) he's getting a *little* better...but his commentary is still filled with "um", "er", "ah", "well", "like", etc. And his accent/anunciation/style is...shall we say...less than high-class.

Not much to argue there. The car finished 6th, 0.7sec behind the winner. Only thing close was the Scirocco, which also finished 6th, but was something like 2.3sec behind the winner.
(Though if I wanted to be snotty, I could point out that I still PAX'd higher. :p But then someone would mention that might have something to do with why SM got nailed on PAX for '07  )
We figured it was time to give the Scirocco a rest, and Darryl is a tough negotiator. :D
Funny thing is that the car was previously owned by the guy who co-drove our Scirocco at the ProSolo Finale in 2004. Total coincidence, as Darryl didn't know we knew him when he started negotiating for the Bimmer. Small world, eh? 8)

Still, Shane and I can have our fun against each other in STX. Looks like STX will have quite the showing next season.

after all this discussion, I expect that there will be nothing but perfect, sporting behavior out there tonight. Fast people waiting for their opportunities, and slower people letting the faster folks by. :)
Or a total grudge match. :x
I am hoping for the former (the good one).

You guys suck. The closest thing I have to this here in Wausau is Christmas shopping at Walmart. (They have carts too) I like to loosen up the shopper in front of me with a little bump draft. She will usually swing out wide and I can take her on the inside and get to the Houswares dept. before her.
Anyway, enjoy the karting and appreciate that you have that kind of thing close to you.

Try pushing the cart up to speed, then jump on the back and hold your arms out like your flying... people look at you funny... huh...

I can't make it for the last event. :( I'm going to ND for X-mas.
Anybody want to buy my spot this Thursday for $20 via PayPal? You'll get at least two sessions of karting, plus it's the last event so there will be pizza and pop (and rumors of some adult beverages) at the end.
Wish I could make it.

So, is Neal organizing the next league, or was he just being volunteered by the pro kart guy? (what's his name, anyway?)

what are "good" lap times?
I finally made it back after a year+ away from the karts. I was able to touch the 21s on my second session of the new track. There was no real traffic to speak of. I think it'll take me another half dozen sessions to explore different lines.
Also, how many laps before the tires reach their max grip? And then do they fall off?
out
21's are good times
the real fast guys do 20's,but I've never been there
the track surface changes too
last week sunday most everyone was in the 22's
2 weeks before it was low 21's
so there are alot of variables ....sort of each week can be different
but you're competetive with us at 21's
too bad there's TRAFFIC
join up next time for a league

Someone had told me that they had an oil spill during the week, and had to scrub down the whole track. Don't know if it is true or not, but it might explain the slower times.
