We have two Novice Schools in the Spring, if you're new I suggest you go to one of them. Cost is 50 or 60, half day classroom on a Sat, full day in a parking lot on Sun (have to do both days). Calendar will be posted when the dates are finalized. As for the car, if it's roadworthy the class won't wear it out, you will need to be sure it's safe though (will cover that before the class). Hope to see you at one of the classes!

The dates for the 2007 Novice Schools are:
April 21-22 Novice school 1 (Dunwoody & Midway)
June 16-17 Novice School 2 (Dunwoody & Midway)
You only need to attend one of the weekends, and the cost will likely be $50 - which includes lunch on Sunday.

I went to the April Novice School in 2006, and it was great. You get plenty of seat time on the Sunday, lots of help from "the best instructors money can't buy", and oodles of helpful info about how events are run.
The class was worth every penny.
Stuart.

We will see what the orginizers say. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if your application was rejected. You should pony up for Evolution school.

I helped out at the school last year. It is a very good place to start an autocrossing career. Gretchen Austin ran the Novice school this year as her first autocross experience, and has placed in the top 25% of the PAX at an event this year.
I failed to see a single person who's time did not improve greatly over the course of the day, turning out some very quick drivers in the afternoon runs. I would highly recommend it even for people who have run 1 or 2 events.

Great info on the 2007 novice training. I'm planning to return after a lot of years off - last time I drove a Snell 80 helmet was good enough and I drove a '75 Scirocco... slowly. It was good for last place, every time.
So to prepare an old novice for the training, perhaps someone has some suggestions for finding a new helmet. Who's got the best selection? Best price?
Thanks!

Bobs is local to MN. You can pick up and open face helmet for $70 there. Just make sure it is Snell 2005 and your good to go. And make sure not to get a Maroon colored one. That's the color of the clubs loaner helmets. We wouldn't want to get yours confused :)

+1 for Bob's
Good selection, Good prices, and helpfull staff.
Also, you'll probably want to make the trip to Bob's and try on the actual helmet that you buy. I hear that sometimes they range in size enough that two "identical" helmets will fit differently.

+1 on that. Always try on the helmet you are taking home with you, not one "just like it".

The Snell approvals you are looking for are M, K, or SA. Most common is M. I would expect that most Snell helmets sold for snowmobile use are M.
There is no separate Snell standard of which I am aware for snowmobiles.
M = Motorcyle. Perfectly adequate for autocross use.
SA = Special Applications. Meant for automobile racing. One characteristic is fire protection. Not easy to find, and not cheap.
K = For kart racing. Standards are the same as SA except no fire-protection requirement.
Virtually everyone uses M helmets for autocross. It's not worth buying an SA helmet uneless you get involved in big-track events which require them. I've heard of folks who ponied up the extra for an SA because they were going racing "someday", only to have the helmet go out of date for racing before they were ready. I'd suggest buying an SA helmet at the same time you buy a firesuit. The execption is that some open-track events require SA hats and do not require fire suits.

My Bell is SA rated. But it also cost me $300+ for it. I love it. It's the perfect closed face for karting as well. It doesn't fog at all, unlike the motorcycle ones.
But a lot of people like the open face for Autocross. I personally don't. They feel lop-sided in weight. I'll be sticking with my closed face :)

Of course you are. My first helmet was a Bell 500TX in boat-racing orange. It was a 1968 Snell and as far as I know it was fiberglass. You can see it in this pic, but not very well:

Personally, I am glad you're sticking with a closed face helmet. :D How about wearing it all the time?

So when do I get that co-drive? Or are you just going to leave tire-shine on all the cones again?

Besides, I never left any tire-shine on the wall ;)
I'm never going to hear the end of that one.... Suprised Link doesn't hear more on the forum...

This really does seem to be switching from a Miata club to a BMW club.
I'm DEFINATELY not complaining though.

One where most Bimmer owners don't have head/scored cylinder issues...
