Can I just show up and pay entry fee's or do I need to be a part of the scca to drive in the autox? I would love to go but I do not have $100+ to purchase a membership and entry fees and...

It's to early to tell what my school workload will be like. I may consider going, but I'm certainly not driving solo. Maybe in the next few weeks a co-drive can be worked out with someone.

Not another $10. That is a 100% increase. That is just crazy.

Dan,
Co-drive as in with your car, share driving/gas back & forth or as in I'll go if I can drive someone elses car?
Doubt the Sprite will be ready yet but would be up for sharing gas/driving down, both driving your car (or the Miata if not sold yet) if you're interested...

Doesn't matter which way it works out. I'll do either/or, I just don't want to drive for 7 hours total.

Just show up pay $25 and run. I'm not a member of the SCCA either and never have been. I probably should be though.

Actually, we have raised our entry fee for non SCCA members to $30 this year, as have the DMVR folks.
We had some long discussions about this subject over the winter months board meetings and came to to the conclusion that a $5 difference in entry fees does nothing to encourage new membership. Our regional membership dues are holding steady at $15, and with the SCCA membership at $60, that's $25 more than if someone runs 10 events as a non member, which would only cost them $50 more than a member.
I was going to put out a release on the subject soon on the IA region Yahoo list, but haven't got around to it yet, so you guys are the first to know.
I look forward to seeing all you folks back in Iowa again on April 1st, it's always a pleasure having you down here. (especially looking forward to having Darryl, Neal and Katie down here ;) )

Man time is running short. I got to get my tires ordered soon. I was planing on hitting up the first event in Milwaukee, also coming up fast. But maybe I'll do this event instead. We'll see?

Looking out at all the snow thats either on the ground or still falling...
April seems like a long time away.
Aaron,
This event is listed as a test n tune... how do you guys run these? Is it a regular, timed autocross? How many entrants? Skid pad? Scales?
Aaron B
03-03-2007, 08:29 AM
Traditionally, we've run it mostly as a warm up event. Get everything set up like a normal event, course, timing, run groups, but nothing counts for points. Mostly it's an opportunity to dust off the cobwebs and have some fun before starting to think about season points. Because of that, if you've made setup changes over the winter and would like to adjust swaybars, shocks, tires, etc, between runs, you won't be in a huge rush to make sure you get every run in.

I will probably be at this event, weather permitting.
Unfortunatly I will not have my new shocks yet, but that's OK.

The Test n' tune is $30 for nonmembers? No need for pre-registration, right?

Aaron, interested in a co-drive? Otherwise all I have is my sludgebox civic with general all seasons and snow tires on the rear. I'll trade you back for one in my Corolla GT-S once it is ready for HS :)

still haven't done the slave cylinder or brakes. The current brakes wouldn't pass tech. Otherwise I would be there.

I would stay home and fix your brakes first. Plus it is a holiday.

It's been parked for 2-3 weeks now. I'm driving the Civic.

No money to. Moving to a bigger place next month, have to save the $600 + new tires. I can however afford $60 for a day of fun after working 11 days straight.

In the 3 or the WRX? I've got no shocks for the WRX (calling ProParts AGAIN today) so I'll be driving the 3 in HS this weekend.

I'ts not looking that bad. 59 with a chance of showers. It's not the weather, but the thought of driving 8 hours round-trip in the Integra again. However, I really need to do a shake-down on the new suspension, so maybe I'll head down there.

Directions for those that have made the drive down to Greyhound Park in the past:
For those taking Hwy 63
Follow 63 into Waterloo just as you would for going to Greyhound Park.
When you get to Young Arena (the hockey arena on the other side of the Cedar River) stay in one of the left side lanes. Normally you would want to be on the right to continue following 63 but you're going to be getting on 218 this time. Just follow the road that curves to the left under the overpass.
You'll drive past C&S Motors, the Subaru/Hyundai/Mazda dealer at which point the road you're on will merge with 218.
Keep following 218 and eventually you'll find hwy 20, stay on 218, 20 is just a reference point in these directions ;)
Once you're past Hwy 20 you'll see a set of stoplights, turn right. This will put you immediately at ANOTHER set of stoplights, turn right again.
At this point you are on Shaulis rd, keep going and you'll end up at the Lost Island Waterpark, then just go in the gates :)
For those taking I35, get off onto 218 around the Mason City/Clear Lake area and adjust the above directions from there.
For those taking I35 all the way Hwy 20, well, you're just wasting a bunch of time :P

Traditionally, we've run it mostly as a warm up event.
Does this mean that if we are going to drive other peoples cars as well as our own we will have to pay twice? How many runs will we get?

How would this work out for a 2 driver car, potentially a 3 driver car?

Guess I'm SOL. Anyone else up for a co-drive? :)
Aaron B
03-30-2007, 10:46 AM
We'll split it up into two heats as normal, then run by number.
Multi driver cars can just follow the standard xx/1xx run order like they normally would.
If you guys want to try out each others cars, just go ahead and swap drivers for however many sets of runs.
number of runs will depend on turnout. With an average turnout, expect 6 runs. If it's larger than average, might have to knock it down to 4, but I don't see that happening with DMVR holding an event same weekend. I might be able to make 8 runs work since we'll be dealing with a smaller than greyhound park sized course.

We just got back. Tyler and I had a challenge putting anything down in the M3. It was a fine line between power oversteer and low speed understeer. It was by far the most slick surface I've ever driven on, and I've autocrossed in pouring rain  !
We ended up doing second gear launches and running the course in 3rd to help modulate power but it was still like driving on ice. In the end we should have disconnected the front bar and dropped the tires another 5-10 lbs...but we know that for next time. Still...it felt good to be autocrossing again!

I love these events. Like Waterloo last year in the Miata. RWD is for sure the most fun in rain, sadly not the fastest.
I'm sad I missed it. Oh well, I'll make it sometime this year in the GT-S.

As Dave said, it was great get the season going, regardless of the weather. The lack of grip was shocking for a street tire car. It was still better than a Mustang GT on last year's Hoosiers!
It was a good lesson in car control with "limited" traction. Probably would have been wise to let the TC help us out, but where is the fun in that.
Thanks to the Iowa region for putting on the event. We'll be back to see what those DM and FS cars can do on dry concrete.

You guys should have let me know you were going to Waterloo. I went to Des Moines, but would have switched to Waterloo if I knew I'd have another STU M3 to play with.

Honestly, you were probably better off in Des Moines. The surface was so slick that anyone with a rear drive car basically had to idle around in second or third gear.
Hopefully the weather is much nicer in a couple weeks and everything goes a little (LOT) better.
