I would like to. I've never been to an ice event before, so I've really no idea what to expect. Suppose I'll go poke around their web site and see what they have to say about it.

Are they the only club that does ice events around here?

check out the audi glacier lakes club

i don't think i'll get out to an event this winter, though I think it'd be a good learning experience for me to figure how the ABS works.
i have sport snow tires too so that is not the ideal starting point for my competitive side (besides having only 2 drive wheels).

for those that haven't gone-they are fun. just imagine competitive driving where you can put a full cup of hot coffee on the dash and not worry about it! (Just don't hit the berm!)

Maybe not in LaCrosse. We are on approved studded tires, so our speeds were higher, but considering we were DEEP into 4th gear in a 323GTX, the speeds can get pretty fast. Use a cupholder.

tru-dat.
I was thinking of snowtires on a smooth or plowed track.
I recall my first ride along with Bill Owen on the lake. They said "go" and I told Bill, "they said go" and he said, "I know, I'm trying to!" "Jeez, quit babying it already" I said as I thought he might be worried since he was driving my car. Once I got in the driver's seat, I then had full realization of the situation.
And the cool part is that the grip goes down with every run as every car polishes the surface. Usually first timers will get faster anyway as the learning curve is steeper than the polishing/friction curve.

Time to get out the walnut-shell recaps.

The most dramatic "off" I've ever had was on an ice-race course.

I was "touring" the course over the lunch break, in my Sentra with cheap all-seasons and finding the traction to be surprisingly good. As long as I stayed in the racing line that had been roughed up by the studded ice race cars, that is.

Put it into the bank at nearly 70. A loooong ways into the bank.

A friend rolled his ice race car (during practice) the same day. I broke a fog light, he did a lot more damage than that.

LaCrosse is an SCCA "RallyCross" so the speeds should be relatively low. The WAG ice Trails are a whole different deal. They run their events under different insurance and run a much higher speed event.

IIRA will be running true door-to-door ice racing in Garrison this weekend and Lindstrom next weekend, etc through Mar 2nd. I'm sure they could use corner workers, etc. I'll likely be at the Lindstrom event (which happens to be the same lake I plowed in on).

Hmm, my dad has a place near Garrison... but screw that, high of 0 this weekend!

Im very interested in getting the audi out to one of these before the season is over this year; but only 5 days notice and lows of -11 are gonna deter me this weekend. More info about upcoming events would be great though! thanks

assuming your heater works well, temps shouldn't matter much as you end up hanging out in your car 99% of the time after the initial drivers meeting. it's a good excuse to get out on a bitter day.

i needed a jump start when i was out on a similar day as I had been playing tire pressures using a portable pump hooked up to the cigarette lighter- drained the battery down on the bitterly cold day.

also played around with snow tires in back and bald sport summer tires in front- wow, talk about understeer!

just go do it- it's fun

Wish I could do it, but the day would get spendy really quick with entry and probably 3 tanks of gas (turbo+studded tires = horrendously awful mileage).

I should really stop being so cheap and lazy and buy a new thermostat but I'm just trying so hard to avoid the slippery slope that maintaining a beater can turn into. So far I only have 612$ invested in A LOT of sideways fun with that thing (Thanks Mike!). But I spose another 20$ wont hurt if it gives me heat that works, and if that'll get me out to one of these events it'll have paid for itself!

I've been driving around with my recently (after 2.5 years in the garage with a blown engine) functional K1500 and a tow strap and pulling people out of banks just because it can.

So did anyone ended up going? How was it?
I went to quattro event and it was a blast. A bit cold and bumpy, but still loads of fun. I'm thinking about going again this Sunday...

Your avatar looks like you tried an ice rallycross before the lake was ready... ;-)

Assuming I get my thermostat fixed before next Sunday I'm planning to hit that one. I think it looks like a blast

Anyone know what to do for tire pressure on an ice course? I'm guessing you want tires a bit softer than on pavement, but I don't know for sure. I'd like to get my tire pressure setup ahead of time so I don't have to mess with the compressor so much out there....
